FOUNTAIN VALLEY – A 50-year-old man was struck and killed while crossing Brookhurst Street on Wednesday night, authorities said.
The man was either walking or pedaling his bike across Brookhurst at Niagara River Avenue, a small residential street between Garfield and Ellis avenues, when he was struck by a Volkswagen Beetle traveling northbound on the roadway just before 6:30 p.m., Fountain Valley police Lt. Jim McNeff said.
The man was thrown about 50 feet, McNeff said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman driving the Beetle was taken to a hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries, McNeff said.
Police have not released the man's name but say he is a registered sex offender who listed his address as "transient."
There is no crosswalk or traffic lights in the area where the man was struck, McNeff said.
Investigators say it was dark at the time of the collision, and the man didn't have lights on his bicycle.
Police say they have not found any initial signs of negligence on the part of the driver, although the accident is under investigation. The driver has
not been arrested or cited.
The northbound lanes of Brookhurst between Garfield and Ellis were expected to be closed for several hours as police go over the scene, McNeff said. ..Source.. SEAN EMERY, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER
