Rapist battered to death by mob in Chipinge

4-4-2012 Africa:

A mob of 10 villagers reportedly fatally attacked a Chipinge man who was caught red-handed raping a neighbour’s wife in Musirizwi village in the district. Police this week said no arrest had been made, but urged people to desist from meting instant justice.

The deceased, Kenneth Majuta (26), on Monday last week went to his neighbour’s homestead at Musirizwi village in Chipinge where he forced open the door at the 24-year-old complainant’s hut at around 10pm.

He found her asleep in her bedroom hut. Police said Majuta went to the bed pretending he was the complainant’s husband and raped her once. However, as they were being intimate, she noticed that the man was not her real husband.

She then screamed for help while preventing the rapist from leaving the hut. One of the villagers implicated in the murder, Simon Chireni, rushed to Chigumira’s homestead and found out Majuta had raped his neighbour.

He then tied him up and proceeded to call the complainant’s husband, Prince Simango, who was at Lovemore Chimene’s homestead in the same village. Police said Chireni teamed up with nine other villagers and assaulted Majuta.

“When they arrived at Chigumira’s homestead, the 10 started to assault the now deceased several times using logs, clenched fists and booted feet. After a prolonged assault, they handed him over to the police who took him to Chipinge,” said acting Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Enock Chishiri.

“He was referred to Chipinge District Hospital for treatment, but he died the following morning,” he said. Chishiri said no arrests had been made because all the 10 villagers left the village after realising that Majuta would not survive.

“We are advising members of the public not to take the law into their hands and they should report all matters to the police,” said Chishiri. ..Source.. by NewsDay

Child abductor, rapist killed in encounter

11-8-2010 India:

CHENNAI: Mohana Krishnan (23), a cab driver who kidnapped a 10-year-old girl and her seven-year-old brother before raping the girl and drowning both the children in a canal, was shot dead on Tuesday.

Mohana was gunned down in Coimbatore in what the police called an encounter. Four days ago, he had asked for mercy killing.

Police said they had to open fire as the accused snatched a revolver from a sub inspector and tried to attack the police party when the policemen fired in self defence, killing him on the spot.

"The accused was being taken to the scene of crime by a team of five personnel in an Eicher van when he snatched a revolver and threatened the policemen to drive him to Palakkad. He then opened fire, injuring two sub inspectors, Muthumalai and Jothi. Our men retaliated. The accused took three bullets, two in the head and one in the chest," Coimbatore city police commissioner C Sylendra Babu told ToI.

"The incident happened at 5.30am today," he confirmed.

The injured policemen have been admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The commissioner said sub inspector Muthumalai suffered a bullet injury of the stomach, while Jothi was injured on the right hand. "Muthumalai's condition is a matter of concern," he added.

Mohana Krishnan, while being taken for the potency test – a mandatory procedure in rape cases – on November 4, had pleaded with the police that he be given mercy killing. The public rage at the accused was so much that he was pelted with eggs and footwear when he was brought to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for medical tests.

Mohana Krishnan had abducted the brother and his sister on October 29 for ransom. The children were waiting for their van to school when Mohana Krishnan came in another vehicle and told them that he was their substitute driver for the day since the regular driver P Renjith Kumar was not on duty. The children got in. An hour later, when Renjith Kumar called up the children's parents saying the children were not to be seen, they informed the police.

Their bodies were fished out of the Tirumurthy Dam, 77 km from Coimbatore. Renjith Kumar told police about Mohana Krishnan, who has served as substitute driver earlier. Police arrested him and his accomplice R Manoharan. Later it turned out that the girl was raped before being drowned.

Even as Tamil Nadu was in a state of shock over the case, a 14-year-old school boy from Chennai was abducted on November 1. The boy was returned after his parents paid a ransom of Rs 1 crore the next day. Last Wednesday, the Chennai police tracked down and arrested the abductors who turned out to be young MBA graduates who had worked abroad and returned to India to make a fast buck. ..Source.. by The Times of India

Molest slur sparks lynching

10-5-2010 India:

Durgapur, Oct. 5: A mob of 50 lynched an alleged molester and almost killed two of his friends in a Bankura village today, meting out street justice while police took hours to arrive from a nearby outpost.

A police officer said based on the accounts of eyewitnesses that the trio were lifted like “an elephant picks up a man with its trunk and flung to the ground”, underscoring the brutality of the beatings that followed alleged lewd comments passed at a schoolgirl cycling by. The youths, in their twenties, are yet to be identified.

Some of the villagers who watched the incident unfold in Saltora’s Hakara village and informed the police claimed the events would not have taken such a gory turn had the cops reached the spot in time.

The injured were admitted to the Bankura Sanmilani Medical College and Hospital in an unconscious state. “They have multiple injuries on their heads, limbs and other parts of the body. Their hands and legs are also fractured,” a doctor said, referring to the injuries suffered in the thrashing with bamboo sticks and rods.

The trouble began when the Class X girl, the daughter of a small farmer, was cycling to school with some classmates around 11am and the three youths on a motorcycle blocked her way, passing lewd comments.

“When she tried to ignore them, one of them pulled her hand and she fell off her cycle. She started shouting for help. Her schoolmates also raised the alarm. Some villagers rushed to help,” the officer said.

Scared, the youths got on their bike and tried to escape but were waylaid by another group down the road. “I was buying things from a grocer and saw the mob charge at the youths screaming that they would not spare them as they had tried to molest and kidnap a girl from the village. It is an insult to the village and we will teach them a lesson, the mob shouted, as it set upon the three,” said villager Kanchan Ghosh.

Officers from Saltora police station who spoke to the locals painted a blood-curdling picture, saying that at one point of time during the thrashing, the youths were picked up high over the villagers’ heads and flung to the ground. “Just like an elephant picks up a man with its trunk, they were hoisted and flung to the ground,” the officer said.

Even as the youths were being beaten, some villagers escorted the girl home. The youths’ bike was torched.

Bankura police chief Pranab Kumar suggested the youths were not from Hakara. “We have learnt that all of them had come from Punishole in Onda area of the district. We have started a molestation case and will arrest the two injured youths (after they recover). We have also arrested a villager for beating one of the youths to death,” Kumar said.

The police team from Saltora, only 6km away, was greeted by protests when it arrived two hours later. Asked about the delay, Kumar said “it took some time as the road is very bad”. ..Source..

Accused Rapist Lynched in Bolivia

2-2-2010 Bolivia:

LA PAZ – An 18-year-old man accused of rape was lynched by a mob in the central Bolivian city of Quillacollo, police said.

Emigio Negrete was attacked by the mob around 5:30 a.m. Sunday, the FELCC law enforcement agency’s commander in Cochabamba province, Col. Carlos Quiroga, told Efe.

About 40 people grabbed Negrete, tied him to an electric pole and beat him for allegedly raping a woman.

FELCC officers managed to rescue the teenager and take him to a hospital, where he died a few hours later, Quiroga said.

Lynchings are common in Bolivia, especially in the Andean region, because of a lack of confidence in the police or an absence of authorities.

Residents of some communities hang dolls from light poles as a warning to criminals.

Some groups say lynchings are an example of the “community justice” traditionally meted out in Indian communities that exist on the margins of state institutions.

President Evo Morales’s administration has condemned lynchings even though it promoted the institutionalization of community justice in the constitution that took effect in February 2009. EFE ..Source..

Alleged rapist dies after mob beating

4-28-2009 South Africa:

A man who lured an eight-year-old girl from a party and then raped her was beaten to death by an angry mob in Wyebank, near Kloof.

The man, whose identity is not known, had to be rescued from the mob who beat him to a pulp on Saturday evening.

He died soon after being taken to RK Khan Hospital.

It is believed the man, who is not from the area, isolated the victim from the crowd.

A suspicious witness, who had noticed the two slip away, allegedly caught the suspect raping the girl on a nearby sports field.

It is believed the man alerted residents, who then ganged up on and assaulted the suspect.

Pinetown police spokesperson Solomon Mbhele said police were made aware of the incident by an anonymous caller, who is suspected to have been with the mob.

"When we arrived at the scene, the suspect had been badly beaten by the residents and he was transported to hospital, where he died."

Mbhele said the dead man had not been identified and police were investigating the circumstances of his death.

"No arrests have been made at his point," Mbhele said.

Mbhele confirmed that the eight-year-old rape victim, who was from the area, was receiving medical support and ongoing psychological counselling.

Police are trying to trace the witness who spotted the two leaving the party and the caller who alerted the police.

Mbhele stressed that investigating a crime involving a mob was complex because people who were responsible for the murder first had to be identified.

"There has to be identification before any arrests can be made, which makes it very difficult because it hampers the investigations," he said.

After the mob attack, police issued a stern warning to communities who take the law into their own hands.

Provincial police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge said police would not tolerate acts of vigilantism which sometimes resulted in the death of the suspected criminal.

"Communities should understand the dynamics of what they engage in because you cannot resolve criminal issues by assaulting the suspect. In the eyes of the law, they too become criminally responsible," he stressed.

He also urged communities to let the law take its course and said he did not condone what happened to the suspect.

"This type of crime has to come to an end and communities should work hand in hand with the police. Apprehend the suspect and then alert the police," Mdunge said. ..News Source.. by Slindile Maluleke

Man beaten to death after child's rape claim

1-23-2004 South Africa:
Vigilantism has resurfaced in Khayelitsha, with two men - one accused of raping a child and the other of stealing a cellphone - being bludgeoned to death by angry people this week.

In the first incident, a man accused of raping an eight-year-old girl was killed by a group of people in the France area.

Police said the child was allegedly raped on Wednesday last week after being lured to a house to "help wash the dishes", but she had not told her mother until Monday.

The girl's aunt said she and friends of the family had been told about the rape when the girl's mother called them at 8pm on Monday.

The mother had gone to the alleged rapist's home and confronted him and an argument, loud enough to be heard by neighbours, had ensued.

When the aunt arrived at the house, she found several angry residents gathered at the scene.

"They were beating someone," the aunt said. "I could not recognise him because his face was full of blood and sand. He was lying on the ground dead and there were planks, stones and rocks lying beside him."

The police were called.

The aunt said the girl's mother had noticed that the child was struggling to walk on Monday.

"When she asked the child what the problem was, she said she had been raped," said the aunt. The child was taken to a doctor, who confirmed she had been sexually assaulted.

The girl's father said she had also gone for an HIV test, but the results had come back negative. The child would have another test in three months. She was receiving counselling.
Khayelitsha police spokesperson Priscilla Ndongeni said the case was being investigated.

In another incident on Sunday, an angry mob killed a man accused of stealing a cellphone. Police found his body under a bridge near Site 10. Nine people were arrested and are to appear in court on Friday.

Western Cape police commissioner Mzwandile Petros said he was outraged at people taking the law into their hands.

"We urge community members to co-operate with police in curbing crime and not to take the law into their hands. Vigilantism will not be condoned." ..more.. by Kashiefa Ajam and Babalo Ndenze

Up to late last night, the man's identity could not be ascertained, but residents said he was not from the community.

According to the police, at about 4:30 pm, residents observed a man driving a blue and white Toyota Corona in the district, with the girl aboard.

The residents told the Observer that they became suspicious after the car drove off the main road into a secluded area.

"When we se the car go in a the bushes we went in search of the driver, but by that time he had locked up the car and gone with the girl," one resident said.

Screams from the little girl, the residents said, led them into a woody area where the man was seen hiding behind a tree. On seeing the angry mob, the man reportedly fled. He was cornered by the residents who used stones to inflict wounds to his head.

The man who appeared to be in his early 40s reportedly died on the spot while the toddler was taken to hospital for medical examination.
