Man shot to death in Beaufort County

4-10-2012 South Carolina:

BEAUFORT, S.C. Sheriff's deputies are investigating the shooting death of a man about 10 miles northwest of Beaufort.

Deputies were called to a home in the Seabrook community about 2 p.m. Tuesday and found 23-year-old Octavis Moultrie of Beaufort. He was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Deputy Coroner David Ott says an autopsy is planned at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Beaufort County sheriff's Sgt. Robin McIntosh says investigators don't know what led to the shooting. McIntosh said officers are not getting much cooperation from those who live in the area.

Seabrook shooting victim once among county's most wanted

4-11-2012 South Carolina:

A 23-year-old Burton man shot to death Tuesday outside a home in Seabrook had several previous run-ins with local law enforcement and was once among the county's "most wanted," according to authorities.

Octavius Moultrie, known to his friends and family as "Tavis," was arrested three times in the past five years and accused of crimes ranging from attempted murder to misdemeanor drug possession. Included is a 2007 rape charge that landed him on the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office's "most wanted" list, county court records show.

Moultrie was charged with rape and kidnapping in 2007 after a Varnville woman accused him of sexually assaulting her at knifepoint. A jury found him not guilty in 2009, according to court records.

Moultrie was charged last year with attempted murder after witnesses said he fired a shotgun toward a man in a car in 2010 on Poppy Hill Road in Burton. No injuries were reported. The charge was dismissed after a grand jury did not indict him, according to court records.

In January, Moultrie pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor drug offenses and was sentenced to probation.

Moultrie was found shot Tuesday outside a home on Fawnwood Lane and later died at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, according to the Beaufort County Coroner's Office. Authorities have declined to say where and how many times Moultrie was shot. ..Source.. by PATRICK DONOHUE
